DIY Farmhouse Desk (free building plans)
I cannot wait to show you guys this cool DIY farmhouse desk I built for my kids.
It turned out so great, and I know we are going to get a ton of use out of it! I partnered with BuildSomething.com to bring you these free building plans, and I hope you like this desk as much as I do.
I first decided to design and build my farmhouse desk because this year I’m making a few goals- I will not wear my pajamas to the school pickup line, I’m going to make an effort to manage my family’s screen time, and I am going to officially banish homework from my kitchen counter.
It seems like no matter what I do, my kids always end up sitting at the kitchen counter, working on their homework, and I end up with a gazillion papers spread around, with butter splotches and greasy fingerprints on them while I’m trying to make dinner. So this year, I built my kids this new farmhouse desk. And I am in LOOVE with it!
I knew I wanted a farmhouse style desk to fit in with the rest of my furniture- my farmhouse bench, my farmhouse coffee table, and my Farmhouse picture frame.
So I painted the frame all white, and used a dark stain on the desktop. I also wanted this to be a simple build, so instead of building drawers, which can be complicated, I used crates instead.
I found my crates at my local At Home store, but you could also use this simple wooden crate from Amazon too.
Most of my other Famhouse furniture has planked tops, but since we were going to be using this desk for writing on, I knew I wanted a smooth surface for the desktop.
So I used this tutorial from Vintage Revivals and stacked plywood for the top. It turned out SO smooth and nice- I think the desktop is my very favorite part of the whole build. I love it!
For those of you wondering, I used Rustoleum’s American Walnut stain
And DecoArt’s Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in “everlasting”. I love, love, love using this paint for my furniture.
I’ve been using it for years (on my farmhouse bench) and it’s held up really well, and the application process couldn’t be easier.
If I’m painting furniture, I use this paint with my finishmax sprayer, and I get perfect coverage every single time!

Height?
Where did you find the baskets?? My dad just made this desk for my 10yr old for Christmas!
Where did you get the chair? It’s exactly what I need, but I can’t find anything like it.
Great Article!
