How to Make Rainbow Jello
My nephew had a birthday last month, and for his birthday party, my brother in law made this super cool Rainbow Jello. Everyone was amazed by it, and it was the hit of the party. I knew I had to share it with you guys! So a big thank you to my brother in law, Nick for showing us how to make rainbow jello, and also to his sister Melanie for the amazing photos!
Seriously you guys, how cool is this jello! I could just sit and stare at it all day long!
Rainbow jello is perfect for a party! Imagine walking into a family potluck dinner with this beauty in your hands!
And as beautiful as this rainbow jello is in the dish, just look how amazing it looks when you cut into it! Almost too pretty to eat… Almost.
Are you ready to learn how to make rainbow jello? Here’s the how-to from Nick:
Ingredients:
- Jello- you need enough flavors to make the rainbow. We used 7 in this dish- purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, light red (strawberry), dark red (black cherry).
- Sour Cream
- Cool Whip or whipping cream
Directions:
- 1. Start with the jello you want on the bottom of your dish. Prepare the jello according to the directions on the box, using hot water, but never adding the cold water.
- Once your jello is dissolved, split the hot water mix in half.
- In one bowl, mix 1/3 cup of sour cream until it melts. Pour that into your dish and place in the fridge. Leave the other half on the counter for 30 minutes, while the layer sets up in the fridge.
- After 30 minutes, pour the remaining jello (the bowl on the counter) over the sour cream layer that just set up. Make sure you pour it in very slowly! Now you have two complete layers.
- Repeat these steps, making sure each layer has at least a 30 minutes to set before you add the next layer.
- Let the jello set up really good for a few hours before you serve.
- Top with extra creamy cool whip or whipping cream.
A few tips:
You’re probably thinking “oh boy! this is pretty intense!” Yes, you are right, it seems intense, but most of the time is spent waiting for the jello to set up. The actual work involved in this isn’t too bad. Just set an alarm on your phone, and you’ll be fine.
If you want perfect layers use a torpedo level to make sure your dish is sitting perfectly level in your fridge. And if you don’t like the bubbles in your jello, just use a toothpick to pop all the bubbles before putting the jello in the fridge to set.
Thanks again, to Nick (AKA Superdad) for this great Rainbow Jello Recipe! And to Melanie Hersom (photographer in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area) for the amazing photos- who knew food could be so beautiful!
Wow! What a great idea. Am definitely making this for my grandkids when they come to Seattle in July. Actually, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it as much as they do.
